Black History Month 2016

Image
Still from the film “Faubourg Tremé” features dozens of Black community members of all ages gathered at a street parade. They watch a man wearing a sequined white ensemble outfit and white gloves, with both hands raised in the air. He holds a chalice in one hand. Next to him, a man plays the saxophone. In the foreground, several men and boys wear white suits, several adorned with flowery accessories.

February is Black History Month, celebrating the lives, innovations, and struggles of African American individuals and communities.

New Day has an excellent collection of films for Black History Month, including Faubourg-Treme: The Untold Story of Black New Orleans; Silent Choices, a history of African American women and abortion (no longer in the New Day Films collection); and Beauty in the Bricks, about four African American teenage girls growing up in an urban housing project 20 years ago. Check out the full collection.
