Introduction

Out of the Picture is a documentary film about art critics living through a cultural reckoning and a period of historic transformation to both art and media.

Synopsis

For more than a decade, we turned our cameras on some of the most fascinating thinkers on art in the U.S., art critics navigating rapidly transforming cultural and media landscapes.

Out of the Picture, the first feature-length documentary to be made about art critics in the U.S., has prompted a national conversation about the nature of art, modern life and meaning making in the 21st century.

The deeply human stories of five art critics – Carolina Miranda, Hrag Vartanian, Jen Graves, Seph Rodney and Jenee Osterheldt -- are grounded in deep scholarship. While a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University, director Mary Louise Schumacher led a national survey of more than 300 arts writers across the U.S., revealing new facts about how the art world and its power structures operate.

Director Commentary

I believe arts critics are at the center of our most essential conversations as a society and not covering the leisure activities of the elite, as many presuppose. I wanted to make a film that humanized the quiet and essential labors of these thinkers and that displaces the old cliches of the art critic with a new vision.
