Featured review

"Magda is such a remarkable person, so self-aware in making the affirmative choice to accept her designated role as steward of this artist's legacy, claiming it as a springboard for self-reflection and investigation.... "WOMAN IN THE SKY" is a moving synthesis of Magda's significant contributions to our shared body of knowledge and I'm grateful that the film recognizes and documents this."

Synopsis

Woman in the Sky tells the extraordinary story of Magda Salvesen, who met Abstract Expressionist Jon Schueler in Scotland in 1970. A few months after their introduction, he wrote a will leaving her the entire body of his work. Since Schueler’s death in 1992, Salvesen has secured his legacy and ensured its preservation, with his paintings being part of over 70 world renowned collections including The Whitney, The Art Institute of Chicago, SF MOMA and The Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art

Reflecting on three decades as Schueler’s partner, and even more as the unlikely guardian of his artistic output – longer than Schueler himself spent painting – Salvesen offers an intimate portrait of both a widow and art historian fiercely committed to her late husband’s creative memory. What emerges is an epic love story writ small across hundreds of canvases and thousands of pieces of archival grade paper.

Featuring never-before-seen archival footage, intimate interviews with Salvesen, and stunning cinematography of the Scottish landscapes that inspired both artist and guardian, viewers witness the often-invisible work of art preservation – from managing museum relationships to maintaining the artist's vision – as well as glimpsing the power these works have, not just as aesthetic objects, but as relics of a decades-long marriage and partnership.

Director Commentary

I met Magda when I became her assistant while I was still a student at The Juilliard School of Drama. I'd never met a person so committed to someone else’s creative vision before and I found it remarkable.

Back then she was resolutely “the woman behind the canvases,” whose efforts of artist preservation were described by Diana Ewer, Head of Careers at Sotheby’s Institute of Art, London as “the industry’s gold standard.” As Magda became aware of her own horizon line however, she determined it was time to step into the story to ensure its continuation.

Executive produced by Superman star David Corenswet, and made with full access to the Jon Schueler Foundation archives, Woman in the Sky is an epic love story writ small across hundreds of canvases and thousands of pieces of archive grade scraps of paper. A film that is as much about sharing a life, as it is a testament to the valiant mission of preserving the memory of a creative life against the one way march of time.

Its subject matter should be relevant and of interest to anyone working in or studying Museum Studies, Archive Preservation, Art History, Woman's Studies, or subjects related to graceful aging, the processing of grief or Scottish studies.
