Following the screening of the documentary there will be a panel presentation including Andrea E. Leland, Ethnomusicologist Oliver Greene, and Garifuna tradition bearers Roy Cayetano and Barbara Flores CARVED FROM THE HEART: A PORTRAIT OF GRIEF, HEALING AND COMMUNITY is part of this season's PBS series, Independent Lens. Directed by Ellen Frankenstein, whose previous New Day Films include MILES FROM THE BORDER and A MATTER OF RESPECT, CARVED FROM THE HEART continues to be screened by many community groups and used to trigger discussion about suicide, substance abuse and post-traumatic stress. A follow-up video, WORDS FROM THE HEART, and a user's guide are both available through New Day. Member Marlene Booth will be a featured speaker at the University of Wisconsin where her autobiographical film, YIDL IN THE MIDDLE: GROWING UP JEWISH IN IOWA will be the springboard for discussions of identity, diversity, and difference. The film premiered this past fall at Wartburg, Grinnell, and Barnard Colleges. Members Jackie Ochs' film LETTERS NOT ABOUT LOVE will be the subject of a seminar at Carnegie Mellon University in Fall 2001. Poet Lyn Hejinian, featured correspondent in the Russian-American exchange which is the basis for the film, has won the most prestigious Fellowship of The Academy of American Poets placing her among the ranks of such luminaries as Robert Frost, William Carlos Williams and Ezra Pound. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ MEMBER NEWS ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Jay Rosenstein, creator of IN WHOSE HONOR? AMERICAN INDIAN MASCOTS IN SPORTS had his newest documentary short, ERASED accepted to this year's prestigious Sundance Film Festival. ERASED combines old home movie footage with answering machine messages to create a poignant and moving look at the aging process on the filmmaker's mother. The soundtrack, the traditional Jewish prayer/song "Shalom Aleichem", is performed by mandolinist and three-time Grammy award nominee David Grisman. IT'S ELEMENTARY: TALKING ABOUT GAY ISSUES IN SCHOOL by Debra Chasnoff and Helen S. Cohen is continuing to be a catalyst for educators to find ways to address prejudice with young children, both in the US and all over the world. Educators in Barcelona put together two different forums to use the film (with subtitles in Catalan!) to explore how homophobia affects students in northern Spain. Open Hands, a consortium of religious programs including the United Methodist Reconciling Congregation and Welcoming & Affirming Baptists is using IT'S ELEMENTARY in its new outreach program to parents about addressing sexuality with children. Member Andrea Leland recently traveled to Belize to collect footage for a documentary she is working on with Kathy Berger to follow up THE GARIFUNA JOURNEY. This newest documentary will focus on a Garifuna midwife and healer who lives in Belize, and the relationship she has with her daughter who lives in Chicago. WOMEN OF MYSTERY: THREE WRITERS WHO FOREVER CHANGED DETECTIVE FICTION has been completed by New Day member Pamela Beere Briggs, whose previous New Day project was FUNNY LADIES. "WOMEN OF MYSTERY" profiles Sara Paretsky, Sue Grafton and Marcia Muller, who revolutionized detective fiction by creating the female private eye. The film travels to Chicago, Santa Barbara and San Francisco, where it delves into the world of the fictional female private eye, and follows the writers as they conduct research for their novels and intimately share the process of writing about and living with their female heroes. Pat Ferrero's series of Native American issue videos (IROQUOIS, YUP'IK, HOPI) screened in November at the Smithsonian's Native American Film and Video Festival following a retrospective of her work at the EthnoFilm Fest in Berlin last summer where her classic New Day film HOPI: SONGS OF THE FOURTH WORLD had a special screening. Nila Bogue's film THE CHOICE OF A LIFETIME: RETURNING FROM THE BRINK OF SUICIDE was chosen as a season highlight by Independent View and aired for a second time January 16, 2001 on San Francisco's PBS station, KQED. Karina Epperlein, creator of the 1996 film VOICES FROM INSIDE just completed, after a four year journey, her new documentary I WILL NOT BE SAD IN THIS WORLD which tells the life story of a 94 year old Armenian woman who is one of the few survivors of the Turkish Massacres in World War One. This lyrical film contemplates genocide and remembrance, the hardships and turning points of life, and - most of all - it celebrates old age. Zaroohe's unique vitality and simplicity, her refusal to be sad and the absence of bitterness in her become an inspiration to all of us. Member Shakti Butler's film THE WAY HOME in which eight ethnic councils of women come together to talk about race, is showing at colleges all over the country where it has been a catalyst for dialogue on issues of oppression through the lens of race. Shakti Butler has been travelling and speaking with the video and has met with exceptional success. The video and Shakti bring sensitivity, respect and opportunities for transformative learning.
