Tony Silver's Style Wars (70mins.1984/2003) is recognized by educators, critics and a worldwide audience as the most important film to capture the original spirit and vitality of graffiti and hip-hop, emerging from New Yorks subways, streets and playgrounds into world consciousness. It won the Grand Prize at the Sundance Film Festival on its original release and was a PBS special. With the 2003 release of its 2-disc DVD, it is more acclaimed than ever. Silver's 2003 companion film Style Wars :ReVisited(34 mins.) updates the lives of 26 of the of the original films participants, together with other legendary figures of the time. Silver's Anita Ellis For the Record (30 mins., 1980) captures the final recording session of a legendary jazz-pop artist who was the singing voice of Rita Hayworth in Gilda, and sang the title song in Robert Frank's and Alfred Leslie's Pull My Daisy. Silver's latest feature documentary, Arisman Facing the Audience (83 mins., 2002), tracks the artistic and spiritual odyssey of world-renowned illustrator and teacher Marshall Arisman. It won the prize for Creative and Artistic Achievement at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival. Among his other films are: 30 Seconds At A Time, (14 mins.) on company response to employees who are victims of domestic violence, and All You Can Be, (15 mins.) about the Nursing Program of the New York Hospital.


Silver's award-winning work in theatrical and tv trailers, main titles and special effects includes Wings of the Dove, The People Vs. Larry Flynt, A Map of the World, Platoon, Alien, The Shadow, Tribeca, Resurrection, and many others. He has directed commercials for IBM, American Airlines, General Motors and the Bronx Zoo.

Silver has served on panels at the NEA and NEH, and at the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. He has lectured and shown his films at universities, colleges and museums across the country. He is a member of the International Documentary Association, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the Directors Guild of America and the Scenic and Title Artists Union. He lives in Los Angeles with his wife Lisa Citron. He has two adult daughters and a two-year old grandson.
