In both her video documentaries and gallery installations, Suzanne Girot explores human consumption--what we use and what we throw away.
She produced her recent documentary about medical marijuana, Let Our People Grow, after trying cannabis for her migraine headaches. During the course of her research into marijuana's medicinal properties, she met many people who rely on marijuana to relieve their pain. Let Our People Grow presents their stories.
After earning an M.F.A. at the California College of Arts & Crafts in 1989, Girot travelled Cuba with a group of artists from the U.S. Video camera in hand, she roamed the streets of Havana and conducted on-the-street interviews with Cuban citizens. Cuba was her first video experience. Back home, she produced Havana Bienal, a documentary about Cuban visual and performance art. Havana Bienal has screened at festivals across the U.S. and abroad. Garbage Stories followed in 1992, with a look at four innovative waste reduction programs in Northern California. Currently, Girot is finishing up The Ultimate Dive, about the art and science of dumpster diving.
She joined New Day Films cooperative in 1995 after the release of Let Our People Grow, which is distributed by New Day Films.
Girot has just completed several films about Brazil. To find out more, please visit www.luzdosol.com.
