S. LEO CHIANG is an independent filmmaker based in San Francisco & Taipei, Taiwan, where he operates his production company, Walking Iris Films. In 1998, Directors Guild of America asked Leo to co-direct and edit Directing: How to Get There, for which he documented early careers of several well-known filmmakers including Robert Wise, Norman Jewison, and Steven Spielberg. One + One, his film in the New Day Collection, is an unflinching and poignant look at two couples: one straight, one gay - who struggle with the challenges of their mixed HIV status. Leo, along with producing partner Mercedes Coats, recently completed To You Sweetheart, Aloha, a hour-long documentary about Bill Tapia, the 94-year-old ukulele master from Hawaii, and Bill's unconventional friendship with his 28-year-old manager, Alyssa Archambault.
Leo's work as a freelance non-fiction producer, cinematographer, and editor has appeared on HBO, PBS, and Discovery Channels, among other networks. Currently, Leo is producing Limited Partnerships, a feature-length documentary about the struggles of gay Americans and their foreign same-sex partners to stay together despite the biased US immigration law that threatens to pull them apart.
Leo holds a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering and received his MFA in Film Production from University of Southern California.
