Heather Lyons
Heather Lyons is an independent film and video producer and director based near Lexington, Kentucky. Her most recent work includes M & M Smith: For Posterity's Sake, a documentary on prolific African American artists and social activists, Morgan and Marvin Smith. This documentary was broadcast nationally on PBS, received a Silver Apple Award from the National Educational Media Network and was screened at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian Institution, the Library of Congress and numerous other venues. Previous work includes the award-winning documentaries, Laura Clay: Voice of Change, a biography of Kentuckian and national woman's rights activist, Laura Clay; Imani, an exploration of Kwanzaa, the African American holiday, through the writings of poet Nikky Finney and the work of southern African American artists; and James Still's River of Earth, a portrait of James Still, one of Appalachia's most celebrated writers. Lyons is currently working on a new documentary on the Appalachian photographs of Doris Ulmann, one of the Unites States most respected and prolific portrait photographers during the 1920's and 1930's.
