Alex Nicholson and Jarrod Chlapowski, two openly gay Army veterans who appear in ASK NOT.
Ask Not has been nominated for Outstanding Documentary at the 21st Annual Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) Media Awards. The award-winning documentary, which aired on PBS’ Independent Lens in 2009, explores how the “don’t ask, don’t tell†policy affects the lives of gays and lesbians serving in the military.
Since its release, the film has been used extensively in university classrooms and community groups to spark discussion about current Congressional attempts to repeal “don’t ask, don’t tell.â€
The GLAAD Media Awards aims to “recognize and honor media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community and the issues that affect their lives.†The winners in each category, ranging from wide release film to newspaper coverage, will be announced at one of three ceremonies in New York City, Los Angeles, and San Francisco in March, April, and June.
