Daddy & Papa, a story of gay men raising children, screens with Korean subtitles at the Queens International Human Rights Film Festival on October 16 at 7 p.m. Admission is free.
Festival co-director Aiyoung Choi notes, “The Open Center in Flushing (Queens County) was chosen primarily for the large Korean as well as other vibrant, growing immigrant communities there. We want to promote a greater awareness and understanding of human rights and human dignity as integral to living together in peace and harmony.â€
The film also recently screened at the Seoul International Human Rights Film Festival.
The American Bar Association awarded Writ Writer the 2009 Silver Gavel for Documentary Film, their highest honor. Â The film recounts the powerful story of the emerging prisoners’ rights movement in Texas during the 1960s and early 1970s through the story of self-taught jailhouse lawyer Fred Arispe Cruz and civil rights attorney Frances Jalet. “Writ Writer” had its world premiere at the South by Southwest Film Festival and was telecast nationally on the PBS series Independent Lens.
